Sharper Memory
The brain retains memories by enhancing the bonds among networks of brain cells. Memory is, therefore retained better if there is more brain tissue present.
Exercise, particularly cardiovascular activity, helps hinder the degeneration of tissues in aging, and thus also preserves brain tissue better.
Also, exercise and weight loss regulate glucose levels. Individuals with poor glucose level regulation were shown to have a smaller hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for memory.
Deeper Sleep
People who stay in shape and exercise regularly fall asleep more easily, enjoy deeper periods of sleep, and are less likely to suffer from insomnia.
Some physicians suggest not to exercise for at least two hours before going to bed, as adrenaline keeps one alert. However, no definite conclusion has been reached regarding what time of the day is best for exercise.
